Ask the Flagger March 2010
Dear Phillip,
I was at a roping this weekend.  I roped the steer, and before I could pull my slack, the steer tripped and fell.  My rope was not tight; my heeler had backed off to make the corner.  We did not foul the steer or cause the steer to fall in any way.  When the steer came back up, I dallied and turned off, my heeler than caught his 2 feet.  My question is, had I not turned the steer off, would, or should we have received the option for another steer? Thanks for your opinion.

Dannie:
No, you would not have received another run. This is the luck of the draw. The flagger or the team has no control over a steer that stumble on there own.  Maybe the ground had gotten deeper and the position you were in the go round or the rotation, may have contributed to the steer stumbling at that precise time. The main thing to remember is “Never give up”!
Always finish your run. Do not assume that because you pull up you will be granted a rerun. If you pull up before the run is over the Flagger may believe you have stopped competing and can flag you out. Again Dannie; Always finish the run.
Hope this answers your question.
